The Power of Connection

There are countless memes about friendship that always make me smile.

You know the ones... friends who haven't seen each other for months, or even years, but the moment they reconnect it's as though no time has passed. The conversation flows, the laughter returns, and you're instantly reminded why that friendship matters. It made me think that perhaps it isn't just friendship we treasure. It's connection.

Throughout our lives we meet people everywhere—through work, our children, school, family, sporting clubs, travel, volunteering, or simply by being in the right place at the right time. Every now and then, you meet someone you genuinely connect with. It's effortless. Comfortable. Real.

I recently experienced this while travelling on The Ghan. There were twenty-five of us from different parts of Australia and different parts of the world. Different ages. Different backgrounds. Different stories. Yet somehow we found common ground. We listened, laughed, shared experiences and discovered that, despite our differences, we had far more in common than we realised.

Everyone has a story. If we take the time to listen, we almost always learn something. Sometimes we gain a new perspective. Sometimes we discover we've faced similar challenges. Sometimes we simply enjoy a really good laugh together.

I love people who embrace life. The ones who dance when their favourite song comes on. The ones who laugh without worrying what anyone else thinks. Those moments create memories, but more importantly, they create connection.

Of course, we won't connect with everyone.

Every now and then there'll be someone with whom the chemistry just isn't there. That's perfectly okay. They may well feel exactly the same about us. We can still be respectful, kind and inclusive without forcing a connection that simply doesn't exist. But when you do find your people—whether they're lifelong friends or someone you've only just met—it reminds you of something important.

Connection is one of life's greatest gifts.

It costs nothing. It asks only that we listen, be curious, and be present. And quite often, the conversations we least expect become the ones we remember most.

So this week, take a moment to reconnect with someone you've been meaning to call. Or start a conversation with someone new.

You never know where a simple connection might lead.
