Every day is a new day
I love the saying “Every day is a new day.”
It sounds simple, but I think there is a lot of truth in it.
We can have days when we feel anxious, disappointed, overwhelmed or just plain fed up. Whatever is happening can feel enormous in that moment. Then we go to bed, wake up the next morning, and somehow things can look a little different.
The problem may not have disappeared. But our thoughts about it might have shifted.
We’ve recently spent months preparing our house for sale. We painted, cleaned, packed, moved into temporary accommodation and finally put the house on the market. Our first off-market inspection? Nobody came. Then, when we officially launched, only two groups came through — and neither was particularly interested.
Disappointing? Absolutely.
But that disappointment belongs to today.
Tomorrow, I might see things differently. Someone new might come through the door. The market might change. Or I might simply have had a good night’s sleep and feel more able to put things into perspective.
The same applies to so many things in life. When we’re struggling, it can be difficult to imagine that tomorrow might feel different. But feelings aren’t necessarily permanent. A bad day doesn’t automatically mean a bad week, a bad month or a bad life.
Sometimes we just need to get through today.
And I think particularly of those people who reach such a point of despair that they feel they simply cannot continue. I truly wish that, in that moment, they could hold on for that next day.
I know that is much easier said than done. Those feelings may have been there for a very long time, and another day may seem impossible. But please, talk to somebody. Tell someone how you are feeling. Reach out and allow someone to be there with you.
Know that you are loved.
I was reminded of this recently hearing an AFL player speak about losing his brother to suicide. It was such a powerful reminder that when someone is in that depth of despair, they may not be able to see what those around them can see — just how much they matter and how deeply they are loved.
So whether today has brought something enormous, or simply one of life's everyday disappointments, try not to let one difficult day convince you that tomorrow will be the same.
Have a good sleep. Eat well. Get outside. Exercise if you can. Talk to someone. Give yourself some space from whatever is consuming your thoughts.
And then see what tomorrow brings.
Because no matter what today looked like…
Know that you are loved. And remember: every day is a new day.
